{"id":1024,"date":"2025-11-12T10:43:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T10:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fakelove.info\/staging\/4923\/?p=1024"},"modified":"2026-04-16T06:06:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T06:06:00","slug":"alaye-the-secret-code-word-between-nigerian-scammers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fakelove.info\/staging\/4923\/alaye-the-secret-code-word-between-nigerian-scammers\/","title":{"rendered":"Alaye: The Secret Code Word Between Nigerian Scammers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"b1ce\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@thisisayshim?source=post_page---byline--5b656f51d130---------------------------------------\"><\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize%3Afit%3A1050\/1%2Aj8P-Wak6tYQW9PdHVlRwBw.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Before I explain the meaning of the secret code word used by Nigerian scammers, alaye, I\u2019d like to talk about Nigeria and the country\u2019s languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"fd04\" class=\"\">Nigeria has an incredibly diverse culture, with over 250 ethnic groups and the largest population in Africa. According to Worldometer, the country\u2019s population is currently 239.5 million. A lot of mouths to feed, I\u2019d say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"cb97\" class=\"\">The largest ethnic groups in Nigeria are:<br>Hausa (25%) \u2014 Hausa live in Hausaland in northern Nigeria, the land of Boko Haram.<br>Yoruba (21%) \u2014 Yoruba states are located in the southwest and central regions.<br>Igbo (18%) \u2014 Igbo live in Southeast Nigeria.<br>Ijaw (10%) \u2014 Niger Delta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f5b8\" class=\"\">Linguistically speaking, Nigeria is one of the most diverse countries in the world, with over 500 languages spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f5b6\" class=\"\">Although English is the official language \u2014 and Nigerians speak a bad version of it as I\u2019ve witnessed it in the way their scammers communicate with us during online chat \u2014 English is spoken less frequently in rural areas and among the people with lower education levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"04bc\" class=\"\">There is one uniting language in Nigeria, though, and it is Nigerian Pidgin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1da2\" class=\"\">Nigerian Pidgin, also known as Naij\u00e1, is an English-based creole language used as a dialect in Nigeria to facilitate communication among the country\u2019s many different ethnic groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize%3Afit%3A1050\/1%2Au_NMtiPeoC2HPIrGX7IXHA.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d6dc\" class=\"\">Nigerian Pidgin originated from interactions between British colonisers and Nigerians, and it is a simplified language that uses vocabulary from Nigerian languages, English, and Portuguese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9da6\" class=\"\">Most of my anti-scam sisters speak Nigerian Pidgin because sometimes we hide in scammers\u2019 groups to get insider information. Those groups, especially on Facebook, are allowed to sell hacked social media accounts, gift cards, voodoo priests advertise their black magic potions and rituals \u2014 usually involving some animal blood \u2014 and recruit scammers, and Meta does nothing about it \u2014 even if we report them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"c65d\" class=\"\">When we confront a scammer and their cover is blown, they attack us by calling us \u2018mumu woman\u2019 or a witch. Mumu means stupid. Usually, our reply is something heavier in the meaning department compared to being called mumu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize%3Afit%3A1050\/1%2A5gJ395JXOEKHmM9TWjiShg.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b966\" class=\"\"><strong>The Meaning of Alaye<\/strong><br>And now for the meaning of the word alaye\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"0165\" class=\"\">When you think about it, scammers operate in an ocean filled with other scammers; it is quite possible to encounter yet others just like them within that ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"4fd5\" class=\"\">So, what happens if a scammer ends up talking to another scammer? Let\u2019s say one of them is posing as a woman and the other one is posing as a man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d4f6\" class=\"\">Well, they know what a fake account looks like, so they use the code word: alaye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"340b\" class=\"\">The word alaye has a few different meanings, depending on the context. Here\u2019s the explanation from a Nigerian insider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ed5c\" class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2018s a slang word that originated from south-west Nigeria. \u2018Alaye\u2019 can be used to refer to a wise person, a boss, someone respected in the streets, someone in a position of power or even a wealthy individual. It can also be used informally to mean \u2018my guy\u2019 or someone who knows what\u2019s going on in the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a405\" class=\"\">According to Wiktionary, in the Yoruba language, alaye means explanation or a powerful person, a thug, an area boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b7f6\" class=\"\">However, on the internet, text messaging, and criminal slang, alaye is a code word used by scammers to reveal themselves to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b20f\" class=\"\">If the scammers send you this word, alaye, in a message to see if you are another scammer, so they don\u2019t waste their time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6cd3\" class=\"\">This happened to me, actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"da08\" class=\"\">During my \u2018research\u2019 days, when I was talking to romance scammers from my fake accounts, I had a few occasions in which the scammers \u2014 experienced ones \u2014 used alaye on me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e104\" class=\"\">Here, one of my fake girls is talking to a prolific scammer from Nigeria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize%3Afit%3A549\/1%2AtIegGUKIeol4WUI1iDEFYA.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">screenshot by the author<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3954\" class=\"\">I had to make some changes to my profile after this \u2018alaye\u2019 encounter, but here\u2019s another example of a scammer alaye-ing one of my anti-scam sisters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize%3Afit%3A1050\/1%2AXtzchDTpwqv29vz_SzSt3g.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">screenshot by the author<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ff2f\" class=\"\">And here\u2019s fake Johnny Depp talking to Becky Holmes (the author of Keanu Reeves is not in Love with You):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize%3Afit%3A398\/1%2A72-vb_xDjnI649uqKnD0uw.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"alaye\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot by Becky Holmes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"15db\" class=\"\">The word alaye may seem to be benefiting the scammers, but there is another way of using the word against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ad7d\" class=\"\">If you\u2019re savvy enough to know that the good-looking person who reached out to you from out of nowhere is a scammer and you don\u2019t want to be bothered with him or her, using the word alaye might work like a charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d176\" class=\"\">This is how I do it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6c57\" class=\"\">A good-looking guy sent me a friend request on FB, so I decided to check out his profile. Not that I want a relationship with anyone who suddenly appears on my radar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"56cd\" class=\"\">When I checked his profile, it of course looked like the typical scammer profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3a80\" class=\"\">I messaged him, saying, \u201cNo thanks, scammer!\u201d and he replied with a simple, \u201cOk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7e1a\" class=\"\">A few days later, he sent me another message as if nothing had happened, asking, \u201cCan we get to know each other?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e2c1\" class=\"\">I\u2019m thinking, this scammer is here to play, so I play, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9e84\" class=\"\">As usual, he starts asking the typical questions: age, birthday, where I\u2019m from, and so on. I\u2019m thinking, how many times I had to go through this under the name of \u2018research\u2019, but he doesn\u2019t know that, does he?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7306\" class=\"\">If you\u2019re not familiar with how male scammers operate, their typical profile includes something like: single dad, usually divorced or widowed, from a U.S. city but \u201cdeployed\u201d overseas. Basically, a typical military scam format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"cf57\" class=\"\"><strong>Here\u2019s a tip:<\/strong>&nbsp;If you\u2019re unsure about something they say, do some research to check their story. Also, challenge their profile \u2014 ask questions only a U.S. citizen would know, for example, since they pretend to be from the US most of the time. This way, you\u2019ll get a sense of the lies they\u2019re dishing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"23b2\" class=\"\">OK, here\u2019s how our conversation went:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"abef\" class=\"\"><strong>Me:<\/strong>&nbsp;Let me guess, you\u2019re in the military, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"95df\" class=\"\"><strong>Scammer:<\/strong>&nbsp;Yes, I\u2019m from San Francisco and deployed to Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2fda\" class=\"\"><strong>Me:<\/strong>&nbsp;Syria? Interesting. So, you\u2019re a single father?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5519\" class=\"\"><strong>Scammer:<\/strong>&nbsp;Yes, single father to a lovely daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"dfa1\" class=\"\"><strong>Me:&nbsp;<\/strong>And your wife, she\u2019s either dead or you\u2019re divorced?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6174\" class=\"\"><strong>Scammer:<\/strong>&nbsp;We are divorced, yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"23c3\" class=\"\">(At least this one didn\u2019t say that his wife died of prostate cancer.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"cee2\" class=\"\"><strong>Me:&nbsp;<\/strong>So, the military\u2026 you\u2019re deployed to Syria? What branch are you in?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"c7f3\" class=\"\"><strong>Please note&nbsp;<\/strong>that scammers usually don\u2019t know the specifics of military operations. So, asking specific questions usually confuses, panics, and causes them to make mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"4dc0\" class=\"\"><strong>Scammer:&nbsp;<\/strong>The one in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d59e\" class=\"\"><strong>Me:<\/strong>&nbsp;OK, you\u2019re in Syria, but WHAT BRANCH?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"8e59\" class=\"\"><strong>Scammer:&nbsp;<\/strong>The branch in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3481\" class=\"\"><strong>Me:&nbsp;<\/strong>First of all, if you\u2019re going to pretend to be a U.S. military person, at least learn about the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"aeae\" class=\"\"><strong>Me (again):&nbsp;<\/strong>Alaye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9e4b\" class=\"\">Right after I sent that, Facebook Messenger said, \u2018This person was unavailable on Messenger.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"cbb3\" class=\"\">Of course not!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"99cb\" class=\"\">If a scammer approaches you and you do not want to waste your time, please use the word alaye. It shuts them up and clears the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bede\" class=\"\">How do you know you\u2019re talking to a scammer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"dc88\" class=\"\"><strong>As a side note,&nbsp;<\/strong>the US initiated a significant drawdown of its military presence in Syria, beginning the withdrawal of forces from five bases in the northeastern region. This move is part of a broader plan to reduce U.S. troop numbers in Syria from approximately 2,000 to under 1,000. The decision aligns with ongoing efforts to reassess America\u2019s military engagements abroad and reflects a shift in focus within the U.S. Central Command. This was the case in April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b99e\" class=\"\">Now that you understand the meaning of alaye and how scammers identify other scammers online, I still urge you to be vigilant and not take anything or anyone for granted.
